Automatic Weather Station

An Automatic Weather Station (AWS) is located at a position south of the east-west runway. This station consists of a wind measuring sensor and rain gauge. A display screen is provided within the terminal building.
Above is a photograph of the AWS located at Illawarra Regional Airport showing the Stevenson Screen (white box on left) where temperature and humidity are measured. The station is solar powered. The solar panels and batteries are located at the base of the 10 metre high mast (right) that holds the anemometer, which measures wind speed and direction.
The antenna to the left of the anemometer mast is connected to a radio modem that transmits one-minute data from the AWS to Shellharbour City Council's Terminal Building at the Airport. From here this information is relayed each hour to the Bureau of Meteorology via a telephone link. Data can be obtained more frequently if required during bad weather.
