Security requirements for regional airports have become, and will remain, a major element of operational activities. Illawarra Regional Airport is classified as a ‘security-controlled’ airport. Anyone operating airside must hold a current ASIC and have this with them at all times whilst on airside. Vehicles operating airside must have a Council-approved Airside Vehicle Permit.
In order to meet the new requirements of the Aviation Security Act (2004) Council, with financial assistance from the Regional Aircraft Funding Program undertook a security upgrade of Illawarra Regional Airport included installation of human-proof fencing around the perimeter of the airport’s operational areas, floodlighting, CCTV, special locking systems on gates and new security systems within the terminal building.
Airport security is under constant review in accordance with the requirements of the Australian and New South Wales governments. Assessments must be carried out every six months and the Airport Security Committee meet annually to review security arrangements as outlined in the Transport Security Plan (TSP) for the airport.
